Susitna River

The Susitna River crosses the Denali Highway at milepost 79.3 of the Denali Highway. The Maclaren River joins in about 30 miles down from the bridge, and then the Tyrone River another 10 miles beyond that. The Susitna then presents a series of large oxbow bends and 20 miles of fast water and Class II rapids with a steeper gradient of 20 feet per mile. The river slows for the next 70 miles, with Class I to II water and a 10 foot/mile gradient. This serenity ends at the turbulent waters of Devil Canyon, which should not be attempted except by the most experienced rafters. Very few people have run Devil Canyon, and it has claimed its share of lives and equipment. Do not miss the turn-off onto Log Creek on the left or you will enter Devil Canyon. From Log Creek you can portage past the canyon to Stephan Lake.
