Airplane flying over mountains

Aerial view

This aerial image taken near breakup on the Yukon River shows Calico Bluffs, named for its beautiful colors. Calico Bluffs is located approximately twelve river miles from the village of Eagle Alaska on the Yukon River. Calico Bluff welcomes the river traveler to Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve. Rhythmically layered limestone and shale constitute the Calico Bluff Formation. The spectacular folds and faults are evidence of the compressive forces of the earth. The yellow-green layers in the center of the bluff are black shale that has been coated with sulfur, a typically abundant substance in organic shale. Shale is visible once again on the downriver side of Calico Bluff.
